A court-ordered medical panel has declared Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), medically fit to continue his terrorism trial.
The panel, constituted by the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) on the order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, submitted its report on October 13, 2025. The report, partly read in open court on Thursday, stated that Kanu’s ailment “is not life-threatening.”
Kanu, who has been in the custody of the State Security Service (SSS) since June 2021, faces terrorism charges linked to his campaign for an independent Biafra. His trial, which started in 2015, recommenced before Justice James Omotosho in 2025.

Earlier, Kanu’s lawyers had requested his transfer to the National Hospital based on a prior medical evaluation. In response, Justice Omotosho ordered the NMA to form a medical team to assess Kanu’s health and the adequacy of SSS facilities.
After reviewing the findings, the court ruled that Kanu was fit to proceed and scheduled six consecutive days, starting October 23, for him to open and close his defence. The court also granted his legal team permission to hold private consultations with him in the courtroom on October 22.
The ruling came just days before a planned protest in Abuja calling for Kanu’s release from what activists describe as unlawful detention.
