There was panic along the Ugwuogo Nike–Opi–Nsukka road in Enugu State on Friday evening after suspected kidnappers reportedly blocked the busy highway, forcing motorists to abandon their vehicles.

A viral video shared on social media showed commuters stranded and vehicles halted along the route as gunmen allegedly launched an attack. The road, which links Nsukka to several northern parts of Enugu, was said to have been completely blocked during the incident.

In the clip posted by an X user identified as Chuks, the eyewitness claimed that police officers stationed nearby fled the scene when the gunmen struck, leaving travelers at the mercy of the attackers.

The post read: “Kidnappers operating along Ugwuogo Nike by Opi, Nsukka, Enugu State at exactly 7 p.m. this evening. Police officers on duty reportedly fled for their lives until the Nigerian Army arrived.”

A voice from the video could be heard saying, “Happening live, Nsukka road. Everywhere blocked. East is no longer safe. We are stuck here because of kidnappers. God help your people.”

The development caused heavy traffic gridlock as panic spread among road users until soldiers were said to have arrived to restore order. See video below:

The attack comes days after a violent clash at the New Artisan Market in Enugu North LGA reportedly left three traders dead and several others injured, raising fresh concerns over security in the state.
