Tension brewed in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, on Friday as a group of youths staged a protest against Arise News presenter, Rufai Oseni, over his recent interview with the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.
The protesters, operating under the banner of Concerned Youths for Distinguished Senator Engineer David Umahi, accused Oseni of being disrespectful and unprofessional during the live broadcast. They issued a 24-hour ultimatum, demanding a public apology from both Oseni and Arise News.
Brandishing placards with inscriptions such as “Arise TV and Rufai Oseni must apologize now” and “Youths stand with Umahi: Architect of Nigeria’s road revolution,” the demonstrators described the journalist’s tone as “provocative” and “intended to embarrass” the Minister.
The group’s convener, Pastor Damian Onu, condemned the interview, calling it a “media ambush” and urging the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) to take disciplinary action.

“Senator Umahi is not just a respected leader but a national asset contributing to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda through massive infrastructure projects,” Onu said.
Another protester, Comrade Sunday Agbo, added, “No journalist should attempt to ridicule a man who has given so much to Nigeria’s development.”
The group also submitted petitions to the NBC, BON, and the Federal Ministry of Information, calling for sanctions over what they termed “a breach of ethical journalism.”
As of press time, neither Arise News nor Rufai Oseni had issued any official response to the protesters’ demands.
