Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has thrown his weight behind Omoyele Sowore’s campaign demanding the release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, describing his continued detention as “an open sore on the nation’s conscience.”
Atiku’s endorsement followed Sowore’s announcement of October 20 as the date for a peaceful march to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, under the hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanuNow.
Sowore revealed he had reached out to key figures including Peter Obi, Governors Alex Otti and Charles Soludo, and Atiku, urging them to join the protest. While some did not respond, Atiku publicly declared his support via his verified X account on Thursday.

“The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains an open sore on our nation’s conscience,” Atiku wrote. “Defying court orders that granted him bail is an abuse of power and an assault on justice. I fully support the campaign led by Omoyele Sowore for his immediate release or due prosecution.”
Sowore clarified that the protest is not partisan but a moral stand for justice and rule of law. He challenged Southeast leaders to go beyond rhetoric and physically join the march.
Kanu has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021 following his controversial extradition from Kenya, despite multiple court rulings ordering his release.
