A National Commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), May Agbamuche-Mbu, has assumed duty as the acting Chairman of the Commission following the handover by Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who is proceeding on terminal leave.
The change of leadership was announced during a stakeholders’ meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at INEC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.
Yakubu, who led the Commission for 10 years, said his decision complied with Section 306 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, adding that Agbamuche-Mbu was selected after consultations with other commissioners.
He stated, “I am handing over to one of the most senior national commissioners, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve in an acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.”

The outgoing chairman thanked Nigerians, electoral staff, civil society groups, and the National Youth Service Corps members for their support, noting that their contributions strengthened the country’s electoral process.
Yakubu also presented two publications (Election Management in Nigeria 2015–2025 and Innovations in Electoral Technology 2015–2025) documenting INEC’s progress under his watch.
Before his exit, Yakubu outlined preparations for upcoming elections, including the Anambra governorship poll in November 2025, and confirmed that work had begun ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Appointed in 2015 by former President Muhammadu Buhari and reappointed in 2020, Yakubu remains the first INEC chairman to serve two terms since Nigeria’s return to democracy.
