Nigeria Is Greater Than PENGASSAN – FG Backs Dangote, Calls for Labour Caution

The Federal Government has condemned the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) for what it described as attempts to hold the nation hostage over a minor labour dispute involving the $20 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking at the 31st Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja on Monday, said the refinery is a national asset that must be protected at all costs. He described Aliko Dangote as “an institution” whose investments reflect deep patriotism, urging Nigerians to support rather than frustrate such ventures.

“Aliko Dangote is not just an individual; he is an institution. If he had invested abroad, he would be worth billions more. But he chose Nigeria, and we owe it to future generations to protect his investment,” Shettima stated.

The Vice President urged both labour and the private sector to act with restraint and patriotism in resolving disputes, warning that “Nigeria is greater than PENGASSAN.”

Meanwhile, the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has called for clear policies to protect investors from unlawful shutdowns, stressing that safeguarding businesses is essential for economic stability and investor confidence.

In a related development, Dangote Refinery expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for intervening to stop PENGASSAN’s planned disruption. The company praised the efforts of top government officials and security chiefs, including NSA Nuhu Ribadu and DSS Director-General Adeola Ajayi, for restoring calm.

The refinery also thanked Nigerians for their “overwhelming support” during the crisis, reaffirming its commitment to stabilising Nigeria’s energy sector.
