2027 Electin: "I Would Step Down if a Younger Candidate Emerges Under ADC" — Atiku Says

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says he would not hesitate to step aside from the 2027 presidential race if a younger, vibrant, and widely acceptable candidate emerges under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Atiku made this known in an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, October 1. He stressed that his political ambition is not driven by desperation but by the need to offer Nigerians a credible alternative.

He urged young Nigerians to take active roles in politics, assuring that he would give full support to any youth candidate chosen to contest for the presidency.

“I am not desperate for power. My interest is in rescuing Nigeria from those who have held it hostage,” Atiku said.

Explaining why he moved to the ADC, Atiku accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of frustrating the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by allegedly using some of its leaders to deepen internal crises.

“The crises in PDP kept growing, and hopes of resolving them were fading. Some senior members were being used to destabilise the party, and it was clear from their actions,” he said.

Atiku added that he could have taken firm decisions to fix the PDP if loyal allies held key positions, but noted that those in charge pursued personal interests instead.
