Human rights activist and #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, says Nigeria has yet to achieve real independence, insisting that the country merely swapped colonial rulers for homegrown oppressors.
Speaking during a peaceful protest in Abuja on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, Sowore argued that Nigerians remain trapped under systems that deny them basic freedoms.
“Nigeria’s independence is what we are pursuing. The one they are celebrating is that of the colonial masters. Our own independence has not arrived yet. That is why annually we protest on Independence Day,” he said.

He accused political elites of replicating colonial-era oppression, citing unpaid pensions, clampdowns on free speech, and political repression. “Any country where people work and cannot get pensions is not independent. Any country where people speak and end up in prison is not independent. That is what the colonial masters did, and our leaders are still doing the same,” Sowore stated.
The activist, who has long clashed with authorities, said Nigerians are still living under “neocolonial and slave masters.” He likened today’s cybercrime laws to the sedition laws used by colonial powers to silence dissent.
Nigeria gained independence from Britain in 1960 and became a republic in 1963, but its post-independence journey has been plagued by military coups, corruption, and recurring economic hardship.
Sowore’s remarks echo growing frustrations among citizens battling inflation, unemployment, and insecurity, reinforcing calls for systemic change and genuine liberation.
