Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on Nigerians to use the ballot box to end what he described as the “inept” administration of President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement released on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, Atiku accused the government of abandoning its citizens to hunger, insecurity, and deepening poverty.
“It is tragic that in a country blessed with immense human and material resources, millions of our people have been reduced to refugees and beggars in their fatherland,” Atiku said. “Every responsible government holds the welfare and security of its citizens as supreme. But what we have today is an administration that has abandoned its people. Hunger is killing Nigerians, bandits are massacring communities, yet President Tinubu and his cabinet stand by, unmoved and uncaring.”

He urged Nigerians not to lose faith in democracy, insisting that they hold the ultimate power to decide their future.
“The beauty of democracy lies in the power of the ballot,” he stressed. “Oppressed and battered as our people may feel today, they will have the chance to sweep away this government at the next polls. That is the power no cabal can take away from the people.”
Atiku also reflected on Nigeria’s slow progress since independence, describing the nation as “a giant moving painfully slow on feet of clay” due to decades of poor leadership. Still, he expressed hope that with the right leadership, the country could recover and reclaim its rightful place globally.
On Tuesday, Atiku had condemned renewed bandit attacks in Kwara State, where vigilantes and a traditional ruler were killed, urging security agencies to act swiftly to prevent further bloodshed.
