The Nigerian media space is in shock following the death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a broadcast journalist and news anchor with ARISE News Channel, who was was fatally shot and killed in her Abuja home on Sunday night.
Reports indicate that Maduagwu fell victim to a robbery attack, during which armed assailants dispossessed her of her belongings before fatally injuring her. Details of the incident are still unclear, but security sources confirmed that investigations are underway.
In a statement, ARISE News confirmed the death and called for swift justice. The management described Maduagwu, 29, affectionately known as “Sommie,” as a vibrant journalist who deeply connected with viewers. “Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure,” the station said.

Her passing has triggered widespread grief across the journalism community. Colleagues and friends have described her as a brilliant, passionate, and fast-rising broadcaster whose dedication to her work stood out in the newsroom.
Tributes poured in from media organizations, colleagues, and civil society groups. Many lamented not just the loss of a rising talent but the growing insecurity faced by Nigerian journalists. Some noted that violent crime in Abuja, including armed robberies and break-ins, has become more frequent.
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi expressed his grief on X, calling her passing a “tragic and untimely” loss.
Meanwhile, the Abuja Police have confirmed that investigations have begun. The FCT Police Public Relations Officer said they are probing the matter and asked anyone with information to come forward.
