Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has rejected U.S. TV host Bill Maher’s claim that Christians are facing a deliberate genocide in Nigeria.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, Sani described the remarks as “mischievous and misleading.” He explained that terrorists and bandits attack indiscriminately, with both Muslims and Christians falling victim.

“They kill pastors, priests and imams. They burn churches and mosques. In Zamfara and Katsina, Muslims were recently killed inside mosques, just as Christians have suffered attacks in Plateau and Benue,” he said.

According to Sani, statistics show Muslims bear an even greater toll, as violence is concentrated in largely Muslim states such as Zamfara, Borno, Katsina and Yobe. He argued that political silence, not religious targeting, has fueled skewed narratives. “Muslims and Christians are all victims of terrorism and banditry,” he stressed.

Maher had claimed Islamist groups were “systematically killing Christians” and burning thousands of churches, describing it as “more of a genocide attempt than what is going on in Gaza.”

Public figures and commentators quickly pushed back. Social critic Daniel Regha wrote on X that Maher’s claims reeked of propaganda: “Christians in Nigeria aren’t the only ones being massacred. People of different faiths across regions have suffered. If banditry was only against Christians, then Muslims wouldn’t be living in fear. The government should be blamed for failing to act, not a particular religion.”
