TV host Bill Maher has criticized the lack of global attention on the killing of Christians in Nigeria, arguing the tragedy is being overlooked because it does not involve Jews.
Speaking on his show Real Time Friday night, Maher said Islamist groups like Boko Haram have been waging a relentless campaign against Christians, burning churches and killing tens of thousands, a comment, which has sparked debates among Nigerians.
“They are systematically killing Christians in Nigeria. Over 100,000 have been killed since 2009, and 18,000 churches destroyed,” Maher said. “This is so much more of a genocide attempt than what’s going on in Gaza.”

During the panel discussion, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) also pointed out the lack of media coverage, thanking Maher for highlighting the issue. Maher replied bluntly, “Well, because the Jews aren’t involved. That’s why. It’s the Christians and the Muslims — who cares?”
He further challenged young activists: “Where are the kids protesting this?”
Christian charity Open Doors has described the crisis in sub-Saharan Africa as “potentially existential” for countries like Nigeria. The group says around 150,000 people have been killed in jihadist violence over the past decade, while more than 16 million Christians have been driven from their homes.
Many notable Nigerians have debunked the claim, arguing that it is false and misleading, that the insecurity in the country has no religious backing, that even Muslims in the North have been killed and slaughtered by terrorists and bandits.
