At least 10 local vigilantes were killed and five others abducted when armed terrorists attacked Oke-Ode, an agrarian community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, in the early hours of Sunday.
Residents said the attackers arrived in large numbers and engaged the vigilantes, including forest guards, in a fierce gun battle. Despite their resistance, the vigilantes were eventually overpowered.
A disturbing video from the scene showed several bodies lying in pools of blood as families and neighbours wept in anguish. A community source described the situation as “terrible,” blaming the withdrawal of soldiers who had previously provided security. “Now our people are exposed,” he lamented.

The attack has deepened fears in Kwara South and North, where rural communities have relied on vigilante groups as their primary line of defence against repeated bandit incursions.
Reacting to the incident, Rafiu Ajakaye, press secretary to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, described the killings as “devastating beyond words,” while noting that the vigilantes’ efforts prevented an even worse outcome. He confirmed that three guards died, one was injured, and that some of the attackers were also killed.
The latest assault follows a separate attack in Tsaragi, Edu Local Government Area, where gunmen abducted a businessman, Suleiman Ndana, during a midnight raid. His abduction has heightened anxiety across the state.
