The management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has terminated the employment of all its Nigerian workers, in what appears to be a sweeping response to their mass unionization.
Political commentator Imran Wakili broke the news on X, stating that the layoffs happened less than 24 hours after 90 percent of the staff joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
The decision reportedly comes via a memo dated September 25, 2025, signed by Femi Adekunle, Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management. The memo cites a “total re-organisation” of the refinery, blaming recent acts of sabotage in various units as justification.

Affected employees were ordered to surrender company property to their line managers and obtain exit clearances. The finance department has been tasked with computing entitlements and benefits per their employment terms.
This development escalates ongoing tensions between Dangote Refinery management and the labor unions over the issue of unionization. PENGASSAN has vowed to work toward recalling the dismissed workers.
As the dispute unfolds, many in the oil and gas sector are watching closely, fearing the move could spark further unrest or legal challenges over workers’ rights.
