Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has blasted the United Nations, accusing it of being powerless in the face of Russia’s ongoing war against his country or even the war in Gaza between Israel and Palestine.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, September 24, Zelensky said global institutions have become “too weak” to prevent bloodshed.
“Nations can speak about their pain from stages like this, but there isn’t a single international institution that can truly stop war,” he declared. “That’s how weak these institutions have become. Weapons now decide who survives.”

The Ukrainian leader warned that the world is sliding into a new arms race, with force replacing diplomacy as the main driver of international relations. His remarks highlighted Russia’s ability to block meaningful action at the UN Security Council, where it holds veto power.
Zelensky’s speech came a day after meeting U.S. President Donald Trump, who for the first time publicly supported Ukraine’s right to reclaim all Russian-occupied territories.
Trump also signaled he may consider fresh sanctions on Moscow but insisted Europe must join any new measures—a prospect that faces major hurdles.
