A group of respected Igbo elders on Wednesday stormed the Abia State Government House in Umuahia, demanding the immediate release of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The elders, drawn from across the South East, gathered at the main entrance and presented their concerns to Governor Alex Otti. Speaking on their behalf, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezebuiro said Kanu’s prolonged detention was “unbearable,” pointing to his failing health and the worsening insecurity in the region.
He urged Otti to rally other South East governors and lead a strong delegation to President Bola Tinubu to secure Kanu’s freedom. “Kanu’s continued detention benefits no one. A political solution is the only way forward,” Ezebuiro said.

Another elder, Chief Chinedu Obilor, argued that if the government could engage with bandits, then dialogue in Kanu’s case was long overdue.
Responding on behalf of Governor Otti, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, and Chief of Staff, Caleb Ajagba, commended the elders for their peaceful stance and assured them their demands would be passed on to the relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, an Igbo diaspora group, Ikenga Think-Tank North America, raised fresh concerns in an open letter signed by its President, Dr. Dunkwu Agbambu. The group condemned what it called “genocidal killings” in the South East and accused Igbo leaders of silence.
It demanded Kanu’s unconditional release, freedom for other Biafran agitators, the dismantling of military checkpoints, and stronger steps to secure Igbo land.
The group warned political elites: “Your silence emboldens the perpetrators of this crisis. History will not remember you kindly.”
