BREAKING: Gunmen Kill Catholic Priest in Enugu

Tragedy struck in Enugu State on Friday evening as gunmen shot dead a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya, in Eha-Ndiagu community, Eha-Alumonah, Nsukka Local Government Area.

Fr. Eya, who served as parish priest of St. Charles Catholic Church, was returning from Enugu when he was attacked. Witnesses said the assailants, riding on a motorcycle, trailed his car near the site of an ongoing hospital project.

They reportedly shot at his tyres to force the vehicle to stop before firing multiple rounds at him at close range.

While some initially suspected a kidnapping attempt, community members believe it was a targeted assassination since the priest was alone and no effort was made to abduct him. “They forced his car to stop and then shot him repeatedly. It didn’t look like a kidnap case,” a source said.

The late priest hailed from Ugbaike, in Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area. As of the time of this report, neither the police nor the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka had issued an official statement on the killing.
