The Anambra State Government has announced plans to construct a second airport in Ndikelionwu, Orumba North Local Government Area, barely four years after the commissioning of the Chinua Achebe International Cargo Airport at Umueri.

Mr. Martins Nwafor, Managing Director of Chinua Achebe Cargo Airport and chairman of the newly formed Airport and Aerotropolis Committee, disclosed this during an inspection visit on Friday. He said the project forms part of the state government’s vision to transform Anambra into a smart megacity.

According to him, the new facility will go beyond aviation. It is expected to integrate residential, commercial, and logistics developments, creating what he described as an “aerotropolis” that will drive industrialization and unlock new economic opportunities.

“The project will be a game changer, attracting investment and accelerating development across the state,” Nwafor said.

Community leaders, including Fabian Nwosu and Ifesinachi Onwurah of the Ndikelionwu Welfare Association, welcomed the initiative, pledging their people’s support and highlighting the potential for massive job creation.

Other officials at the site visit included Prof. Charles Ofoegbu, Managing Director of the Anambra State Solid Minerals Development Company; Retired AVM Ben Chiobi, Senior Special Adviser on Security, and architect Chukwudi Ezenwa. Geologists and geophysicists were also on hand to map the proposed location.

With the new airport and industrial park, Anambra hopes to position itself as a major hub for commerce, transport, and investment in the South-East.
