The public dispute between actress May Yul-Edochie and her former lawyer, Emeka Ugwuonye, has continued to spark reactions and stir debates among Nigerians; sides have been taken.
How It All Began
May Yul-Edochie hired controversial legal practitioner Emeka Ugwuonye, who was debarred in 2018, to represent her in divorce proceedings against her estranged husband, actor Yul Edochie.
The marriage had already become sour after Yul’s relationship with Judy Austin, and May’s legal team cited adultery among the issues in the divorce suit.
Ugwuonye, acting as her lawyer, worked with her fans (dubbed “May Nation”) to amplify her claims.

Their professional relationship broke down around July 2025, according to Ugwuonye, who said he resigned after observing what he described as persistent attacks by May Nation upon his person and May’s refusal to acknowledge the attacks.
In retaliation, the angered Ugwuonye, noticing what seemed like inappropriate behavior from May and her supporters, turned against them and started making a series of claims, which, until now, have not been debunked by May or her team.
Soon after, May’s new legal team sent legal notices, including a cease-and-desist letter from May demanding a public apology, retraction of social media posts, and payment of ₦1 billion in damages from Emeka Ugwuonye.
What the Accusations Are
Ugwuonye revealed 14 lies he claims to have been told by May, ranging from bragging about her financial role while married to Yul, falsely alleging threats from Yul with a licensed gun, and using her family and fan base for branding rather than genuine legal or emotional claims.
Ugwuonye also revealed that Yul was pressured into marrying May after she got pregnant, that their marriage lacked deep love, and that May had prior knowledge of Yul’s relationship with Judy Austin.
However, through her legal team, May insists that Ugwuonye defamed her by making false statements, engaging in cyberbullying, and disclosing their private conversations. She wants Ugwuonye to publicly retract his claims, apologize, and pay damages for harm to her reputation.

Many observers believe both parties should act maturely and responsibly.
Some argue that Ugwuonye should not have gone public with unverified personal communications, as it risks damaging trust and legal ethics.
