The High Court in Ebonyi State has ordered the release of 12 members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who have been in custody since May, 2021.
The news of the court order and their release was shared by their legal counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, on his Facebook handle.
According to him, the Ebonyi State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) formally withdrew the charges against the IPOB members in accordance with previous court rulings.
Out of the 36 IPOB members that were arrested on May 24, 2025, 12 have gotten their freedom, while Ejiofor believes that the remaining 24 would soon be free as justice can only be delayed but not denied.

“On April 10, 2025, a significant milestone was reached at the Ebonyi State High Court, where 12 Biafran detainees, part of the 36 arrested on May 24, 2021, were finally freed, in accordance with multiple court rulings discharging them,” Ejiofor wrote.
Ejiofor revealed that he personally made sure the detainees were released and that the prison authorities did conform.
“Following the court’s order, I personally ensured the detainees’ release, and the prison authorities complied without delay.
“The release of the remaining detainees is no longer a matter of if, but when. While justice may be delayed, it will ultimately prevail,” he added.
