In a statement released earlier today, the family of former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon announced his passing, saying they accept his death with total submission to the Will of God.
The beloved statesman died after a brief illness, just a day after attending his last Christmas Carol service at the State House Chapel in Abuja, where he was accompanied by the wife of the president, Sen.
Remi Tinubu. Gen. Gowon, widely regarded as a hero of Nigeria, led the country as Head of State from 1966 to 1975, steering the nation through the Nigerian Civil War and playing a pivotal role in efforts to unite the country in its aftermath.
His leadership during one of Nigeria’s most challenging periods earned him respect across the country and beyond, with many remembering his famous quote: “To keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done.” Witnesses at yesterday’s Christmas Carol service described the late general as being in good spirits, singing along with the congregation and exchanging pleasantries with other attendees. His sudden passing has come as a shock to many, as he had appeared healthy during the event. In a tribute, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Gen. Gowon as a “true patriot and unifier who dedicated his life to the peace and progress of Nigeria.
” The statement added, “His legacy of unity and national cohesion will continue to inspire generations of Nigerians.” The family has requested privacy during this difficult time, while also expressing gratitude for the outpouring of love and support already received.
They concluded their announcement with a prayer:
“May God Almighty reward him for his service and grant him eternal rest amongst the righteous ones. Good bye, Hero of our Nation.”
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, but the federal government has indicated that Gen. Gowon will be given a state burial in recognition of his contributions to the country.
